Hillside Grade School’s first grade classes recently participated in a hands-on financial literacy lesson, presented by Citibank in partnership with Teach Children to Save.
Angela Kowlessar, a director at Citibank and parent of a Hillside first grader, presented the program. She taught the students about the history of money and how people have advanced from the barter system to using cash and coins. Additionally, students learned about the cycle of money and how it is made, earned and spent.
As part of the program, the first graders identified the different types of coins available and their worth, as well as learned how to count coins.
Mrs. Kowlessar also taught the students about needs versus wants, and how to save for their goals. Each student received budget envelopes for saving and spending money.
