The district celebrated the accomplishments of students and staff at the April board of education meeting.

Ten sixth graders who participated in the Nassau Community College Science Fair were invited to display their projects and present to the board and administrators. Each sixth grader in the district completed a science project and presented at a schoolwide fair. District Math and Science Coach Lara Holzkamp and the teachers determined which projects would advance to the NCC Science Fair based on public speaking ability, project display and the experiment.

Four students received Certificates of Recognition for earning first, second and third place at the science fair. Owen Martin and Jacob Skibicki earned first place for their project on biodegradable plastics; Sara Rana earned second place for her project on cloning radishes; and Mia Madden earned third place for her project on the best way to rid grapes of bacteria.

Following the science fair recognitions, District Director of Technology Jennifer Scamell announced the retirement of technology aide Marta Krauss. Krauss was thanked for her dedication to the technology department and the district.

The presentations concluded with Student Council representatives from Manor Oaks School. To review initiatives at the school, the students had the board members and administrators play “Battle of the Board.” The students discussed the building’s Lighthouse Leadership initiative and presented the school board with a “check.”
