To celebrate National Financial Literacy Month and provide fun and informative afterschool enrichment, New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District hosted a Financial Literacy Family Fun event at Manor Oaks School on April 2.
District students were invited to attend with a family member and complete six stations to receive a homework pass. The stations included the How Much Is That Pet? which had younger students use beans to symbolize their budget for what they’d need to purchase for the pet and older students added up the cost of owning the animal for a year and multiplied it by the pet’s lifespan; Book Nook, where students could read a children’s book about financial literacy or math-related topics; Vocabulary Head Band game, where students played a game to guess the finance-themed vocabulary word; Are You Credit Worthy? for students to learn about credit scores and responsible financial habits; Get to Know Your Grown Up, where the students were encouraged to ask their family member about their first job experience; Planning a Party, where students learned how to budget properly to host a party. Students were also able to paint their own piggybank keepsake.
Additionally, students received first-hand tips and knowledge from representatives from FourLeaf Federal Credit Union. At their station, they taught students and their families about banking and what is offered at their credit union.
At the conclusion of the event, students and families expressed that they felt it was a great opportunity for students to learn more about money and finances.
The Financial Literacy Family Fun event was organized and hosted by the district’s Math Support and Financial Literacy teachers Christine Margro, Eileen Prymaczek and Susan Schlueck.
