Hillside Grade School First Graders Create Their Own Thanksgiving Parade Balloons

The hallways at Hillside Grade School emulated the liveliness of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as all three first grade classes proudly marched with their personalized balloon floats in a school parade, “Balloons Over Hillside,” on Nov. 20.

An annual tradition, the first graders read “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade” by Melissa Sweet and created their own Thanksgiving balloon floats the day before the parade. Students chose a character or animal, coloring in the design before taping it to a balloon. Along with the balloons, students made homemade butter in-class.

Families were invited to attend the parade festivities on Wednesday morning. Unicorns, Santas, reindeer, cats, robots and more were displayed on the students’ balloons. Following the colorful parade, the students and their families made a craft together and enjoyed tasting their homemade butter on cornbread.
