Manor Oaks School Fourth Graders Combine Science with Art

Manor Oaks School fourth graders in Megan Soebke’s class learned about the bones that make up their hands in a recent Mystery Science unit.

The lesson began with the students examining their own hands. They were instructed to move their hands and curl their fingers to try and identify where bones might be. They compared the similarities between a human hand and a bat’s wing, as well.

Then, the fourth graders utilized their artistic talents to trace their hands and draw knuckles, joints and finger bones. The students used an X-ray image of a hand to help complete their drawings. Using a Q-tip with oil, the students carefully filled in their bone illustrations to make the construction paper see-through.

The class excitedly brought their drawings over to the windows, letting the light shine through to show off their skeletons.

This school year, the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District introduced Mystery Science, an innovative and hands-on curriculum that encourages students to think like scientists and participate in engaging investigations.
