GATE - Gifted and Talented Enrichment Programs (Formerly Enrichment)
The NHP-GCP School District offers two Gifted and Talented Enrichment (GATE) Programs; Odyssey and Mathletes (formerly Math Enrichment) for students in grades 4-6. The Odyssey Program offers qualifying students the opportunity to be academically challenged in English Language Arts and Humanities. The Mathletes program offers qualifying students the opportunity to be challenged in the area of Mathematics.
In accordance with our district’s policy, students who are accepted into the Mathletes and Odyssey programs are evaluated based upon three criteria:
-CogAT (Cognitive Aptitude test given around March/April of 3rd grade or upon referral to the program for new students)
-NYS Assessment scores (or STARS scores ONLY when NYS scores are unavailable. ELA/Reading scores are used for Odyssey and Math scores are used for Mathletes)
-Renzulli Scale Evaluation that is completed by the past two classroom teachers according to our district's policy. Report card grades are not considered to be part of the overall criteria, as student's academic progress would be reflected in the Renzulli Scale evaluation.
Students are referred automatically at the end of third grade if their CogAT (Cognitive Aptitude) score is 125 or above. However, please note that they are not automatically in the program. Classroom teachers may also refer students in grades 4-6 to the programs if they feel that the student would benefit from enrichment, even if their CogATs are below 125.
Both Odyssey and Mathletes are pull-out programs and up to 90 minutes each, weekly. Students participating in one or both programs are expected to:
-maintain their grades in their regular classroom
-make up any missed assignments that were completed while they are out of the classroom
-meet the challenges and complete the work assigned in enrichment programs
